This 24.5-Inch Long x 3.5-Inch Wide headband features 2-Inches of adjustable velcro, making this headband one-size-fits-most. Lined with velvet, this natural Sea Otter headband is truly as Alaskan as it gets. Naturally water resistant, Sea Otter fur has been used by Alaskan indigenous peoples for hundreds of years due to its durability, and it's unparalleled ability to contain heat. Don't get us started on its softness, it's one of our favorite furs to work with because the moment your hand touches the fur, you're in heaven.
Why Sea Otter? With up to a million hairs per square inch, otter fur is prized for it's softness and warmth - arguably, the warmest in the animal kingdom. For comparison, we only have about 100,000 hairs on our head. Seaotters.com tells us that "When Russian explorer Vitus Bering stumbled upon a group of otters living on the Commander Islands in 1741, he probably didn’t anticipate that these animals would play a role in changing boundary lines on the world map and unhinging the fragile coastal ecosystem of North America. What was clear was the value of their pelts." (Cannon, 2012) Having nearly decimated the Alaskan Sea Otter population along the Aleutian Islands, "Russian hunters moved to present-day California. By the late 1700s, British and American hunters had begun harvesting otter pelts in California and selling them to trading outfits including Hudson’s Bay Company. But as sea otters became less numerous along the coast of North America, Russia placed less value on the settlements it had established to support hunting, setting the stage for U.S. Secretary of State William Seward to buy the Alaska territory for $7.2 million in 1867. That works out to about two cents an acre" (Cannon, 2012)
